SEQUENTIAL
WORK

Sequential work and storytelling are a core interest of mine.

I’ve explored ways to combine traditional, analogue media and Fine art aesthetic with sequential formats.

I’ve refined a process using ink drawing and watercolour ink washes to create graphic novels using traditional media.
I like to push this into mixed media by adding monotype and collage to get different effects. I’m also exploring the relationship between text and image, to push the literary element in the storytelling, rather than using comic-style speech-bubbles and onomatopeia.

NATIVE AMERICAN FOLKLORE PROJECT

GRAPHIC NOVEL
Ink, coloured inks, watercolour, gouache
2024
A five page graphic novel, the culmination of a month or more’s research into Native American folklore. The aim was to find ways that ‘absurdity’ was reflected through nature, which became an in-depth exploration of many tribes and nations’ cultures.
I created this story as a combination of several key elements that stuck with me, including the trickster character and the personification of natural forces like winter.

It’s a good example of the analogue approach to sequential illustration that is key to my practice.

INVISIBLE CITIES

ILLUSTRATED TEXT
Ink, monotype, collage, paper engineering
2023
A short passage from Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’, illustrated and clothbound as a book.
It was great fun exploring different visual metaphors, even as far as abstraction, and quite a loose playful use of media (combining monotype, collage and ink).
This was the start of my exploration into ink drawing with mixed media as an approach to sequential storytelling.

ASTRONOMY PROJECT

ILLUSTRATED (SELF AUTHORED) TEXT
Ink, coloured inks, watercolour
2023

A project of extensive research into astronomy. The concept was two simultaneous storylines; the story of the Universe from it’s beginnings going forward, and the story of human astronomy from the present day backwards. I thought this was a cool idea, I loved working on it. I didn’t have time to get it done in full, but I fleshed out the story of the Universe fairly well.

The compositions and general style was inspired by Medieval and Renaissance astronomy charts, in which alot of the elements are turned into characters and coloured ink is used to great effect. This is an approach I’m still informed by, particularly Islamic and Indian works in which perspective is altered for effect.
