ABOUT
I’m an artist and illustrator working in several media; drawing, print, painting and sculpture being the cornerstones. I’m attracted to projects that allow me to use traditionally fine art approaches in the illustration context.
My work is mostly realism, with the figure, architecture and natural forms returning consistently. However,I’d like to pursue abstraction further in the future. Sequential work is key to my practice, I’m often looking to approach storytelling through fine art sensibilities.
I’m inspired by different places and cultures; I conduct extensive research on both to inform my projects, and travel always feeds into my practice. Treating research like its own art form is something I always loved about Da Vinci, which I try to emulate in my own practice. A recently finished a graphic novel, based on Native American folklore, was an example of this.Mythology and folklore have always been key interests, as an intersection of culture and storytelling. My projects have often been attempts at retelling various folk tales or myths in a new context.
Studying religious art has been enlightening, particularly Indian sculpture. The embodiment of living philosophy/belief in the art, and its interactive quality, is inspiring. It’s informed my whole practice and way of looking at art, not just sculpture. Patternwork, sacred geometry, and other forms of intricate abstraction are other areas of interest that I’ve started incorporating into my practice.
I dip my toe into many disciplines, some seen as illustration and some as fine art; but always with a love of traditional media and capturing inner visions through image.
